Publicsh Date:2023.06.17
This competition has started out for scientific exploration to encourage contestants to find a way of learning other than science exhibitions so that more people may learn and practice scientific techniques to describe things. This was the 10th time this competition was being offered. A total of 284 schools sent 1,127 teams (28 from abroad) to compete.
From five groups (elementary school, junior high school, high school, vocational high school, and teacher), a total of 30 teams were selected to advance to the finals. The first prize in each group went to Affiliated Experimental Elementary School of National Chiayi University, Kaohsiung Municipal Minghua Junior High School, National Experimental High School At Hsinchu Science Park, National Chia-Yi Industrial Vocational High School, and teachers from National Kuan-His Senior High School and Taoyuan Municipal Shou Shan Senior High School (co-champions), respectively. Wang Zhenglin of National Chung Cheng University won the Junior College Social Group.

The NCHC of Narlabs, Deputy Director General Fang-Pang Lin(right) awarded prizes to the top three finishers in the vocational high school group.
Fang-Pang Lin, Deputy Director General of the NCHC of Narlabs, pointed out that science research talent was the foundation of the development of a nation. The NCHC has long assisted Ministry of Education and National Science and Technology Council to promote popular science education, "2023 Taiwan Science Exploration Fair-To do, To understand" has been held for 10 consecutive years since 2014, with the hope of stimulating students' curiosity and exploration of science through activities. This year,it’s good to see that the number of competition entrants has reached a new high, which shows that this competition has gradually attracted students to scientific inquiry, and is of great help to the learning of science of Taiwanese students. In addition, in order to encourage females, aboriginals, new immigrants, and their offsprings to participate in scientific explorations, this competition has also set up an incentive mechanism, leading to more women participants than men in 2023 (51%: 49%). It shows that females can indeed be encouraged to participate in scientific explorations and they are no longer fearful of science.
In "2023 Taiwan Science Exploration Fair-To do, To understand", contestants picked their own competition topic so long as it is related to everyday living. The elementary school group used drawings, junior high school, high school, vocational high school groups used research reports, junior college social group used popular science, and the teachers group used lesson plans. All groups except the teachers group must also turn in a film of 3 to 5 minutes in length. The top six teams in each group that advanced to the final round had turned in products that touched a wide variety of aspects of everyday living while their films were very attractive. Over the past 10 years, the competition has received close to 10,000 pieces of works, which are all stored on the hosts of the National Center for High-performance Computing and available for students and teachers to access.
