The National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) participated in the discussion on "New Opportunities for Supercomputers - Development and Outlook of Quantum Computers"
Publicsh Date:2023.04.14
NCHC Director General Chang Chau-Lyan said that when he participated in the Supercomputer Conference (SC) in Dallas, Texas in the United States in 2022, he saw the vigorous development in quantum computers at international tech giants and start-ups alike. In particular, he saw the active role that quantum computers have played in HPC. An app capable of showing the incorporation of quantum computer architecture into traditional HPCs as an example to show how supercomputers might harness a specific cutting-edge service has become an application with important commercial potential. He also hoped to use his ideas to draw out more ideas from others in the hope that the development of quantum computers would launch an industry on par with the one that TSMC has helped create.
During the seminar, Director General Chang said that the peculiar software and hardware structure of quantum computers has prevented them from directly adopting the traditional computer development methodology of writing programs to directly drive computing. The short-term goal of Taiwan's academic circles is to first master fundamental research techniques, discover opportunities that can produce results, and combine HPC technology in traditional data centers with quantum computers to set in motion the transformation of future supercomputers.
Cryptography and quantum security systems and opportunities present promising opportunities for quantum computer applications. The NCHC has also achieved important academic goals in the development of quantum cryptography. It has published important manuscripts on theories of using homomorphic encryption or federated learning to protect key data. It is hoped that the NCHC will play a facilitating role in growing the technology in industry and academia.
