| Research and Education Network

TWAREN provides high quality network services for Taiwan's universities and research institutes and further plays the role as a research platform to promote Taiwan's network technology development.

The TaiWan Advanced Research and Education Network (TWAREN) is a project under the Taiwanese government's Challenge 2008 plan, a comprehensive six year island-wide plan of development, the purpose of which is to foster the creativity and talent that Taiwan needs to achieve success in the new world economy.

TWAREN’s 100 Gbps backbone interconnects its four core nodes, located in Taipei, Hsinchu, Taichung, and Tainan, respectively. The 13 Gigapops, located at major universities in Taiwan, connect to the core nodes via 100 Gbps bandwidth, and are further protected by TWAREN’s double uplink design that maximizes performance and availability.

The goal of the TWAREN project is to provide fundamental support to national research institutes and to facilitate international academic cooperation. TWAREN plays a critical role in provisioning network connections to academic research institutes. It also serves as a platform for developing network technologies such as performance measurement, Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), multicast, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP), eLearning, and multimedia. TWAREN also supports the NCHC Grid-based applications, ECO Grid, Medical Grid, and eLearning Grid.

In order to facilitate the software-defined networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) development, TWAREN provides a SDN testbed for Taiwanese research institutions to connect to collaborating institutes located in Japan, the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands. TWAREN currently has a 20 Gbps international links to Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, and peers with other international research and education networks via these three co-locations.

Connecting to TWAREN

TWAREN’s services are open and available to universities, academic and research institutes, governmental organizations, non-profit organizations, and other networks, for the purpose of academic, education, and/or research. Other types of organizations may also apply to use TWAREN for the purpose of research or advanced application development. In the latter case, the application can be made in the form of a project that specifies a deadline. After approval, the connection can then be established.
