The Undertaking of a Large-Scale International Collaborative Project, Fish4Knowledge2011/11/01

In 2011, the NCHC, the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom), the University of Catania (Italy), and Stichting Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) (Netherlands) began the joint undertaking of a large-scale three-year €2.5 million research project under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), Fish4Knowledge. The NCHC has for many years offered a web information integration platform for the underwater real time coral reef image monitoring stations in the ocean near Kenting and Lanyu, Taiwan. The platform is used for scientific observations and environmental education, and has collected an immense amount of image data over the long period of observation. The purpose of Fish4Knowledge is to facilitate scientific discovery through the automatic recognition and analysis of the species, their quantity, behavior, and to generate high-level intelligent queries of fish near coral reefs.
