The 25th anniversary of NSTC-NRC technology cooperation between Taiwan and Canada: NCHC hosted an AI and3D technologies seminar

2023.10.02

September 26, 2023, marked the 25th anniversary of technology cooperation between National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). The National Center for High-Performance Computing under National Applied Research Laboratories (hereinafter referred to as NCHC) co-sponsored the AI and 3D Technologies Seminar, bringing together Taiwanese and Canadian science and technology representatives on the forward-looking applications of artificial intelligence and 3D technologies in academic, research, and technological development

The seminar was kicked off by Professor Cai Miaoci, Deputy Director of the National Science and Technology Council's Division of Forward-looking and Applied Technology, Professor Cai Zhihong, General Convener of Taiwan Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence, NCHC Director General Chau-Lyan Chang, and NRC Chief Digital Research Officer Joel Martin. Deputy Director Cai said that scientific and technological exchanges between Taiwan and Canada have been developing steadily since the National Science and Technology Council and the NRC first signed a cooperation agreement in 1997. They have jointly promoted scientific and technological innovation, and they will continue to work together in the future to harness the wisdom and enthusiasm of scientists from both countries to create longer-term cooperation.

During the bilateral exchange reports, Academia Sinica Information Technology Innovation Research Center researcher Li Yujie took the lead in presenting an Overview of Taiwan's AI. Then the two countries discussed three major themes: AI for Discovery and Digital Twin, 3D Technologies (vision and printing) and AI for Indigenous Languages. They shared the latest research progress in the fields of material science, digital twins, 3D technology, and indigenous language and culture. These are not only current hot technology topics, but also reflect the direction of future technological development.

Material discovery and digital twins were a major focus of the seminar. Through HPC simulation and AI machine learning, scientists can simulate various real-world scenarios in a virtual environment. This not only profoundly impacts industries such as manufacturing and construction, but also brings about new opportunities for technological innovation.

Lastly, the seminar turned its attention to the application of AI in the preservation and inheritance of indigenous languages. Through artificial intelligence technology, we hope to protect and pass on rich and diverse languages and cultures, and do our part to the safeguard cultural diversity.

The bilateral exchange on AI for Indigenous Languages speakers include NRC Chief Researcher Roland Kuhn, NCHC Researcher Xiao Yihao, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University Professor Liao Yuanfu

This seminar successfully  brought together the technological wisdom of Taiwan and Canada and laid a solid foundation for future technological cooperation. We look forward to more forward-looking and substantively influential cooperation projects in the two countries in the future. This can be achieved within the framework of national scientific and technological cooperation.
