2013 SEAIP and PRAGMA Institute Workshop and Conference2013/12/16
The “2013 Southeast Asia International Joint Research and Training Program in High-Performance Computing Applications and Networking Technology (SEAIP 2013)” and the Pacific Rim Applications and Grid Middleware Assembly (PRAGMA) workshop and conference, organized by the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) and with the support of National Science Council (NSC) and the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs), was held in the NCHC’s Taichung and Tainan Branches, and on the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) campus, from December 2nd to 6th, 2013. This was the first time that the conference was held in Tainan and, as such, will serve as warm-up for the PRAGMA 26 conference to be hosted by the NCHC and held in Tainan in the spring of 2014.
A total of 200 professionals from 36 academic institutes located in 13 countries attended this year’s conference. The first three days of the event were held at the NCHC’s Taichung Branch and the 4th and 5th days were held at the NCHC’s Tainan Branch as well as the NCKU campus. This year’s featured agenda was that of Big Data and included ten distinct topics of discussion. Participants discussed “e-Science for Scientific Expedition” with researchers from PRAGMA and the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON).
For the event, leading members of academia from Europe, Asia, and the Americas were invited to lecturer, report, and share their R&D results and future plans in large engineering and scientific computing and applications, grid computing, and high-speed optical fiber networks. Forthcoming cooperation and exchange projects were discussed between participating institutes as well. Big data Visualization was also the subject of a first day training course in which researchers and students experienced and exchanged knowledge first-hand.
Taiwan possesses leading technical superiority in high-performance computing and networking within the Pacific Rim and has engaged in long-term cooperation with PRAGMA. The NCHC has hosted SEAIP since 2009. SEAIP is dedicated to facilitating international cooperation and training and has obtained preliminary results in structuring professional training organizations in Southeast Asia as well as establishing the necessary operation mechanisms therein.
Ongoing training provided by the SEAIP conference will serve to further increase the depth of research and development in Taiwan and Southeast Asia as a whole. The focus of each year’s conference will be on the deepening of key information and communication technologies (ICT) and applications, as well as to provide a platform for frequent exchanges between researchers in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The conferences will serve to promote international and academic cooperation, and gradually elevate Taiwan’s status to that of an international education and R&D excellence center in the field of HPC and networking.
