Tiled Display Wall (TDW)

Web site: http://medusa.nchc.org.tw/avweb/

Advanced visualization and virtual reality technologies have become the standard means by which scientists and researchers express complex data sets. An effective immersive visualization environment is key to understanding the research being produced today. At the NCHC, our goal is to create the ultimate distributed 3D passive stereo system. In pursuit of this goal, our Advanced Visualization Group (AVG) assembled a high resolution rear-projected TDW. Along with the TDW, the AVG also developed the software and algorithms necessary to run 3D geometry reconstructions over it. These distributed rendering packages included Image-based Visualization Interface (IvI), IvIsee, IvI4MIE, and IvItune.

The NCHC's TWD consists of a 4 x 3 meter display wall containing 12+1 Nodes and 24 rear-mounted digital projectors. It is capable of producing digital resolution of up to 4,096 x 2,304Hz. Using gigabit Ethernet for inter-machine connectivity and communication, our TWD is able to display static high-resolution graphics, browse large-scale dynamic 3D geometric models, broadcast high-quality animated movie files, as well as simulate the windows desktop environment (Virtual X-Window Screen).

In the near future, we hope to develop our TDW project to the point that we will be able to demonstrate 3D passive stereo over it. Once we have accomplished this goal, our TDW unit will truly be a professional platform over which to support the visualization needs of Taiwan's R&D communities.

TDW is a 16: 9 large-scale stereo display platform constructed by 24 projecting cameras.
