Introduction

The Science Volunteer's mission is to provide and promote quality volunteer services to our national and international communities utilizing state-of-the-art computing technologies. We also facilitate opportunities for the technically-skilled, elderly, and younger generation to use their gifts and abilities for the benefit of their communities. These services help foster character, civic involvement, and sensitivity and help our citizens become responsible and active members of society.

According to Taiwan's Volunteer Service Act of 2002, the NSC, the NCHC's parent organization, is the primary agency in charge of promoting volunteerism within Taiwan. The NCHC, under the NSC, has been tasked with the planning, maintenance, and promotion of Taiwan's Science Volunteer project. The Science Volunteer project was formed with the goal of increasing the number of elderly, white collar, and civilian population participants in volunteerism and increasing awareness of volunteerism in Taiwan.

The Science Volunteer program utilizes advanced HPC and IT technologies like computing, networking and storage to create a model for the Science Volunteer. The Science Volunteer project effectively combines IT with volunteerism so that the power of new technologies can help “bridge” Taiwan's digital divide. The Science Volunteer project has made virtual volunteering, volunteer management, training, and education a reality.

Science Volunteer Project Future Developments:

  • We will construct a standardized Science Volunteering protocol/structure
  • We will professionalize the Science Volunteering service
  • We will accumulate the knowledge gained through the various Science Volunteer projects by completely digitizing the training phase using professional instructors. In so doing, digital education can then be promoted via the global information network and mass communications mediums.
  • We will join with the National Digital Learning Project in order to nurture a culture of digital learning
