Better HPC Better Living

The National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC) is Taiwan's leading source for HPC hardware, software, and networking resources. We are committed to developing innovative and life-enhancing applications that best utilize these resources. The focus of our new slogan, "Better HPC Better Living," is on improving the lives of people and the environment we live in. Our goal is to establish a unique dialogue between science, technology, and the world we live in, while, at the same time, enabling science discovery and technology innovation.

The NCHC is a national laboratory founded in 1991 under Taiwan's National Science Council (NSC). Effective January 2003, the NCHC transformed from a governmental entity into a non-profit organization now under Taiwan's National Applied Research Laboratory (NARL). Since that time, the NCHC has taken on the additional responsibility of meeting the nation's HPC, networking, and platform integration requirements. In 2005, the NCHC became ISO 9001-2000 certified. By meeting this international standard of quality, the NCHC is able to offer an unparalleled level of service.

The NCHC has established three business units in Taiwan in order to provide comprehensive HPC and networking services to the entire island. Our Hsinchu headquarters business unit serves northern Taiwan and is our Supercomputing Center. Our Taichung office serves central Taiwan and is our Knowledge Management Center. Our Tainan office serves southern Taiwan and houses our Network Operation Center (NOC). The NCHC hopes to cultivate hi-tech talent within Taiwan by providing total HPC and networking service from coast to coast.

The government of Taiwan recently implemented the Challenge 2008 plan, a comprehensive six year island-wide plan of development, the purpose of which is to foster the creativity and talent that Taiwan needs to achieve success in the new world economy. The NCHC plays a critical part in fulfilling the Challenge 2008 goals by building the Taiwan Advanced Research and Education Network (TWAREN) and developing its twin project and primary application driver, the Knowledge Innovation National Grid (KING). These projects have transformed Taiwan into a world-class knowledge center. We hope to use these resources to form global alliances and create an environment where HPC resources are shared among all nations.
